For this research project, you will need to follow the procedures outlined below in order to complete your writing assignment successfully.
Consult your textbook for proper format of papers written in MLA style or visit http:// owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ . You should incorporate at least five (5) sources.
The Works Cited page is separate from the body of your paper; entries should be in alphabetical order according to author? last name OR the first word in the title of the article if no author name is given; exclude A, An, and “The” as first words.
To facilitate your research, the professor has prepared a sort of personal database that contains a number of articles pertinent to the topic that you choose. The two subject areas that are available for this project are as follows:
Issues in Athletics and Academics
Technology and Education
Within these broad subject areas, you may limit your topic to a narrower field. For example, if you choose to address the subject area of Technology and Education, you may refine your topic to a discussion of the uses of technology in higher education (its benefits or drawbacks), or you may wish to discuss how technology may be beneficial to K-12 students. Remember: the subject area is broad; the topic you choose should be more focused upon a specific issue or issues within that subject area.
YOU ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE SUBJECT AREA PROVIDED TO YOU IN THIS ASSIGNMENT. YOU MAY THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX FOR THIS IF YOU WISH, BUT YOU WILL BE RESPOBSIBLE FOR GATHERING YOUR OWN SOURCES. ADDITIONALLY, YOUR TOPIC MUST BE APPROVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR AT THE CONCLUSION OF WEEK 4!
Within Course Documents, you will find folders named as the two broad subject areas listed above. Each folder contains five (5) to seven (7) articles. You may also use relevant articles from outside sources. Once you have chosen the subject area that appeals to you the most, you should then read (or skim carefully) the articles within that subject area. At that point you will be able to refine your discussion and create a topic.
Your Topic Submission (worth 10%) is Due at the Conclusion of Week 4; the Research Paper, itself, is due at the conclusion of Week 5!
Since the purpose of this essay is to familiarize students with basic research and documentation, penalties for disregarding MLA style are severe. Research Essays submitted without any references will earn automatic zeroes as will work without a Work Cited page. Research Essays with incorrect Work Cited pages will lose 20% automatically. Correct, MLA-formatted citations can be copy/pasted from any resource found using the Alabama Virtual Library.
You should take an argumentative stance. That way, you will not be simply writing a book report like you may have had to do in other classes or even in high school. You will be able to formulate an argumentative topic in which you take a stand on a particular issue. A reasonable person should be able to take the opposing side of your issue. Your job, then, is to convince him that your position is correct, or at least that it should be seriously considered. If there are not at least two sides to your issue (look at your thesis statement), you basically have a review of literature, not an argument. Refer to essays throughout your DAV text for sample thesis statements that make claims. In addition, the PowerPoint that accompanies this unit (within Course Documents in the Research Topics folder) will assist you not only in creating a good argumentative topic but also in incorporating your sources to support your assertion.
