Discussion Prompt: Ethics: Euthyphro Problem
Plato famously argues in his Euthyphro dialogue, that the good (or the holy) cannot be merely a command of God (or the gods as Plato might have stated it). He claims to present us with a dilemma: First, if God’s command makes something good, doesn’t that make the good arbitrary? Couldn’t God say “murder is good” tomorrow and then it would be good? Second, if God commands something because he knows that it is good…doesn’t this make the good higher than God in a way? This dilemma is classically known as the Euthyphro dilemma.
Considering this ethical dilemma, respond to these questions:
How do you respond to this dilemma as a Christian?
Is there a solution to the dilemma? How does the Bible present the relationship between the good and God?
