Select two texts in two different genres on the same topic (the topic could be an event, focused issue, argument, person, etc). Discuss how the genres differ in their treatment of the subject. How does the purpose of each text/document dictate choices within that genre? How are genre conventions fulfilled or subverted and for what purposes? What situation or need are the genres responding to? Who is the intended audience for each text and how do these texts’ genres account for audience differently in the way they’re designed? What kinds of symbols do they incorporate and why? Are there underlying cultural or social values and assumptions at play in the way the texts are constructed? What sociocultural narratives do they draw on, further, or critique? Are these texts responding to a particular gap or need in a conversation?
For example, you could select a podcast and a journal article that talk about coral bleaching or compare the rhetoric of protestor’s signs at a march to a related organization’s mission statement. Alternatively, you might choose to select from genres that are important for your major or career trajectory, such as the artist’s statement and the art it describes.
