Q. 1 Main approaches to student plagiarism
On college campuses, the two main approaches of preventing student plagiarism are treating the act as a crime or presuming it to be morally wrong (Ribble & Bailey, 2004). The tutors and lecturers can refer to the student honor codes, which require students to do the right thing at all times. During admission into the preferred colleges, the students are usually requested to consent to the code of conduct that they will uphold the moral standards expected of them in the academic fraternity. Consequently, on the approach of plagiarism as a crime or breaking rules, the school faculties and their administrators are responsible for ensuring the school regulation are followed.
Q.2 Blums viewpoint on why traditional methods preventing plagiarism fail
Blum states that; the reason for the failure of this method is that most students lack knowledge on the true meaning of academic integrity (Scanlon & Neumann, 2002). She denotes that academic integrity is usually not taken seriously by most students as they lack information on the seriousness of this offense. Consequently, most students are usually engrossed in achievement and success, which makes them do anything towards getting better grades.
Q.3 How the notion of college originality have changed since the 1960s and 1970s
During the 1960s and 1970s, there was no internet where the student could quickly get materials that can be plagiarized (Selwyn, 2008). The only source of learning was via books which made it hard to plagiarize the original work. However, in the modern day, the easy access to study materials on the internet has contributed to the increased cases of student plagiarism.
Q.4 Solutions offered by Blum towards handling student plagiarism
Blum offers the solution of incorporating the citation skill more in colleges which will help the student learn the correct citation methods. Blum emphasizes academic integrity in which she suggests that tutors should have a uniform citation to avoid the existing bias among students as they try to identify meet their tutor’s expectations (Scanlon & Neumann, 2002). According to Blum, it is okay to refer to other people’s work, but all ideas borrowed from these other sources should be cited appropriately to give credit to the authors.
