Each student will complete a cultural genogram. Instructions are at the end of this syllabus. The primary goal of this assignment is to discover your cultural biases (values) by identifying your personal cultural values, the values of your family of origin, and of your other cultures (any cultural group). Discuss how these varying values are similar and different. Culture is not necessarily limited to ethnicity, but may also include but is not limited to areas such as religion, sexual or romantic orientation, gender or gender identity, SES, the region in which you were raised, your generation, and ability; and if you are European-American, you still have a culture which may be related to your European roots and/or dominant U.S. culture. You would benefit from researching the literature (more books than journal articles) on your cultures with references; anthropology might have the best sources (ANTHRO). Start your introduction with a brief story of your family (3 generations, if possible). Then discuss 3 cultural trait trends/values that nearly all of your family holds and that comes from a larger culture; you may or may not be in alignment with your family. I would be happy to meet with each and every one of you about your particular family tree and how you plan on approaching the paper. Please do not hesitate to ask me to review an outline before completing the paper. Your paper should be organized in the following level 1 headings:
Introduction of your family for 3 generations.
Include any relevant information about this group such as immigration patterns, common stereotypes, and experiences of oppression or privilege; this information can come from interviews and/or research.
Give some demographic information on the cultural group(s) about which you are writing in this paper that may be relevant to the values you discuss.
An exploration of 3 different value trends.
Value
What is the value and give an example of how your family demonstrates it.
Discuss from what culture it originates. Use research to support your assertion. This should be more than one sentence but a deeper understanding from your source.
How you align or do not align with it; give an example. If you don’t align, consider and include a theory about why you don’t align with your family. Either way, conceptualize yourself thinking about this value through a cultural identity development model, and acculturation, if acculturation is relevant. This can be discussed within each value or in a separate section. Use references on which cultural identity development model you will be using (Helms, Sue & Sue, others?).

Social justice through Advocacy heading:
Create a fictitious character from a marginalized group that is different than your own with values different from those you described in this paper, and imagine they are coming to you for counseling. Give this person a name.
Identify a challenge in their life and how culture intersects with this challenge.
Identify a common derogatory stereotype about this group, and how it derives from dominant cultural values and norms, which can result in systematic oppression. If you can, make it align with the value that challenges you.
Describe the value difference between you and the client and how that difference could negatively impact your work. Include a brief discussion on how you might mediate this potential negative impact.
Identify one way in which you as a counselor may promote social justice through advocacy on their behalf outside of the counseling sessions. Be specific about an action of social justice (macrocosm) not a therapeutic intervention. Avoid “blaming the victim.” This should be an act to dismantle white supremacy for all individuals who share the culture of your client.
Conclusions heading: Summarize what you learned about yourself from this assignment.
Use APA 7th Edition format and upload using Word (not Google Docs or PDF, which lose formatting). The paper is usually 12-15 total pages. If you are seeking an A or A-, please review the criteria for A Grade Papers listed in the section below assignments. Following proper grammar, sentence structure, and APA format are required for this paper.
Personal note from student: If needed, I can include family background but I’d be okay with the writer just making things up.
Family members that were interviewed: grandmother, father, brother. Brief interview questions/answers attached below
