Book Review Guidelines and Details
The Book Review is due on the last day of class (7-28-21). In week 2, students will identify a major content area of interest and a book related to this content area. Your choices will be posted via a shared document on Blackboard for all students to see. Students will read this book over the course of the entire semester and complete a 5-7-page book review that relates important topics within the chosen content area to the book.
Choosing Your Book
v Your book must be approved by the instructor.
o You may not read a reference book, commentary, book of essays, or short story.
o It may be easier to choose a novel-style book, but this is not absolutely necessary
v While some of you may choose the same content area, you MAY NOT choose the same book as another student. Some of your books may naturally, draw in numerous content areas, but you will mostly focus on one
v You may use audiobooks, or free sources, such as UA Library System or Tuscaloosa Public Library or your local public library.
v I encourage you to find a book that you will enjoy and that is readable within the time provided.
Paper Guidelines
1. Provide a summary of the content area you chose: use your textbook to provide a review of content area. Please provide any important concepts or statistics to know regarding your content area. Aim to find statistics that mainly convince your audience of why this topic is important to pay attention to.
a. In this summary, please also use two outside research articles to help provide additional information about your topic. Please cite in APA.
i. Please find original research articles that include a sample, methods, some form of data analysis, results/findings, and a discussion section with implications and a conclusion
ii. These articles MAY NOT be a review of the literature, a critical analysis, or any non-original form of research (meaning the researchers writing the article have conducted this research with a formal analysis of data)
2. Provide a summary of the book you chose: tell me about your book. An example would be a chapter-by-chapter review, a section-by-section review, or stage-by-stage review of the main character’s life…whatever best suits the flow and style of your book.
3. Explain in detail from what viewpoint or perspective is the author writing? Is this an expert (Ph.D., practitioner, researcher)? Is this an experiential perspective (someone who is providing accounts of their own experience)?
4. Explain in detail who seems to be the intended audience?
5. Discuss how well the book covers the content area and whether it provides new information that is not covered in your textbook and/or research articles.

c. Does the book negate or confirm anything your textbook/research articles provide about the content area?

Book Review Infographic
Infographics are an increasingly popular way of sharing information in newspapers, magazines, and online news sites. These visual representations of knowledge and information are designed to make complex ideas and large amounts of data easy to understand. Please return to Week 2 content to revisit some ideas on how infographics and the information they provide look.
With this assignment, you will also revisit your sketch of information regarding your book’s content area to see how they have changed or expanded. You will mostly follow the same directions as the Infographic I assignment to complete your Infographic for the Book Review. Since the point of an infographic is to transfer knowledge and information quickly, your Infographic should be informative, simple, engaging, and design-friendly. For this Infograhic, however, I want you to focus on the following from your book review:
1. New and insightful information regarding your topic (this information may negate what is provided in the textbook, may be more in depth, or simply provide a more practical understanding)
2. How to apply this information in a practical and useful way
a. Assessment

c. Monitoring
d. Evaluation and Termination
e. Follow-up
While focusing on the information above, you must include the following:
1. Make content clear in the title
2. A brief intro of 2-3 sentences under the title (e.g. “What we know about child abuse and neglect is…However, what we do not often see…”)
3. At least 2 sets of statistics regarding your topic; what makes this topic important?
4. At least 2 visuals regarding your topic; please make visuals related to the content area
5. At least 2 cited references outside of textbook; you may use research articles from book review

6. Full name and SW 210-910/920 as a footer of the infographic
As you think about how to visually convey the information you would like to present, please consider the following:
1. Which information, facts, and data are essential to include? Which aren’t?
2. What colors and layout works best in sharing the information?
3. What graphs and graphics best convey information and data to the viewer?
4. What is the order, or flow, of information?
The website www.canva.com is a great place to create an infographic for this assignment. Just create an account, and they have free templates to use. You can save it as a pdf or image, and it is very user friendly. You may also use PowerPoint or any other platform with which you are comfortable if it can be saved as an image or pdf. PLEASE DO NOT USE WORD unless you know how to convert to an image or pdf.
