Discuss hypothetically speaking, maybe younger children being on social media like TikTok can have a little increase in preventing them from using drugs in the long run. The media plays a big role in the War of Drugs. Like stated before Celebrities have a hold on millions of people. What people’s favorite celebrities do, they follow. Media promotes drugs and drug dealing then more people will do them and it starts to become more of a trend.

Anastasyia: In chapter 5 of the book, Goode suggests that the media tends to dramatically overstate the actual number of drug users. I am somewhat agreeing and disagreeing with him. The media does provide false information in some cases to catch the reader’s attention so that more copies of their newspapers would sell out. This connects to the money machine theory that Goode mentioned on page 138. Their main goal is to deliver profit, even if that will lead to “triviality, sensationalism, bias, and irrelevancy” (Goode, 2020, pg 138). Even now some newspapers would say higher numbers just to make their news more interesting to read, knowing that most of their readers will not go looking if that information is legit. On the other hand, newspapers like The New York Times would not risk their reputation for extra money, and instead, they make sure to check if the information they post is reliable. Media plays a big role in the “War on Drugs” because it can influence people in different ways. Some might watch a TV program, or read an article about drug use and abuse and decide for themselves that this is not what they want to do in their life. Others might see a movie that shows drug addicts as funny people that are having a great time, making the viewers be interested in trying out that drug. Media spreads all kinds of information around the world and it is never clear whether this information is true or false.
