Topic: Choices, Values, and the Scope of Ethics
Overview:
This week examines the relationship between that which is intended and the reality of its consequence. On may have free choice to do what they want, however, for every action, there is a consequence, often not one expected. This week stresses the significance of the rational processing of alternatives utilized to express one’s thoughts, etc.
Reading Assignment: Chapter 2; Ethics, Crime, and Criminal Justice
Learning Objectives: At the end of this module, students will
Examine ethical issues in relationship to free will and choice.
Understand the implication of one’s actions upon others
Discuss mechanisms that assist one in understanding and examining the consequences of their actions on another.
Instructors Notes:
The “Butterfly Effect” is similar to the “pebble in a pond effect”. If I throw a pebble in a pond, the initial ripple is small, but each subsequent ripple is larger and out of your control. If a person, kidding, refers to another in a homophobic slang, the initial person loses control of the initial slang. Each subsequent person enhances the slang and it grows in size and perhaps is enhanced. The consequence may be disastrous to the victim.
The consequence may not have been intended, however, the result is the reality.

The student is required to submit a minimum of 500-word paper discussing the film viewed in relation to Chapter 2 that addresses the following concepts: 15 points, April 3, 11:59 pm.
Take the following quote from the text and relate it back to the film: “All of our actions are aimed at something we perceive to be good. If we know what is truly good, our actions will be aimed at what is truly good. Similarly, if we are ignorant of what is truly good, our actions may well be aimed at what we believe to be good, but is truly evil”.
