In your Resick, Monson, & Rizvi (2008) (attached) for this module, the many origins of trauma and the complex symptomatology of PTSD that often remains for the rest of one’s life was discussed. The article explored several assessment tools, as well as some CBT techniques for assisting those impacted by trauma as they learn to manage their lingering symptoms. Although we often associate PTSD with the military, it impacts victims of sexual abuse, crime, natural disasters, and multiple other traumatic life events. Given the current cultural climate, as providers we must be prepared to properly assess for and to partner with clients in working to manage their PTSD.
Discuss some of the assessments and techniques from the aforementioned article that you found particularly interesting and that you might see yourself using in practice. Within your post, please be sure to address the following questions:
How proficient are you in trauma-informed care? (My answer: Moderately proficient. Elaborate and change at your discretion.)
What has your experience of working with clients who have experienced trauma been? (My answer: I’ve worked in substance use treatment. Many people with substance use disorder are victims of trauma. Elaborate and change at your discretion.)
Are you comfortable having these types of conversations with clients? Why or why not? (Yes. My experience has not been that of a therapist, but I have been in positions where I was available to clients when they wanted to talk about things. So when they brought their trauma, it was on their time and it was their decision. So, I wasn’t having to make clients talk about things they did not want to. I believe that is an important part of of having these conversations – the clients readiness. Elaborate and change at your discretion.)
