Consider the narratives of both Olaudah Equiano and Harriet Jacobs; both are true accounts of their lives and, therefore, fall into the category of historical documentation. Both also had another purpose of garnering support for the abolitionist movement in America. However, based on your reading of their accounts, examples of other literature you have read thus far, and the information provided regarding literary merit, would you categorize Equiano’s and Harriet’s writing, in addition to historical writing, as genuine literature meant to explore universal questions through artistic means, or as primarily persuasive writing to promote the interest of African slaves in America?
