Option #2
Discuss the broad influence of Descartes’ view that “The Body is a Machine”, and how his discovery of the reflex paved the ground for our current understanding of the neural basis of behavior and memory. Points to be outlined include:
1. Some idea of the developments following Descartes in our understanding of the main systems in the body, including the CNS and at least one non-nervous system (e.g. circulation).
2. The milestones that followed these contributions by Descartes, and were made possible by them.
3. Among these milestones (see point above), importance and limits of the discoveries by Pavlov.

Option #3
The idea that memories are formed in our minds by associations of individual elements – associationism – has been with us for a long time, at least since Aristotle. Please briefly cover all the following points:
1. Outline the major milestones in the history and development of this concept (i.e. the thinkers involved and their specific proposals).
2. Explain the importance of this in the context of Hebb’s Principle: “neurons that fire together, wire together,” as a simple but powerful potential neural mechanism which could account for associative learning.
3. Discuss any modern experimental evidence that Hebb (and Aristotle) were right.
