In this assignment you will look for five pieces of publicly available published material to summarize. Ideally, these published materials should be articles from social science journals. In some special cases, they may be articles in magazines, newspapers, or material from websites.
Locate five publications you think will give you information on the current scholarly understanding of discussions on your topic. You may have to locate more than five and select the best ones. Each of the publications you use should run at least 2000 words. Please save the five articles on your computer and be ready to show them to your instructor upon request.
This assignment has four main parts:
a straightforward summary of each of the five documents,
a critique of previous research on your topic,
a framework for the summaries, and
a list of references.
The framework is a normal introductory paragraph and one concluding paragraph in which you briefly discuss the five documents together, linking the most important or interesting information you obtained from your five sources. Remember to include a thesis statement in the introduction that will make it clear what the point of this paper is with its five summaries.
You should decide which document you will summarize first, second, third, fourth, and fifth and provide some logical links between the summaries—for example, mentioning that the next summary contains a different type of information from the last, or elaborates on the information from the last, or approaches the topic from a different perspective. In each summary, you can explain the issue(s) addressed, the research methods taken, and the findings gained.
In your critique, spend two or three paragraphs to further discuss the connections between these five pieces of literature, new knowledge that you have gained from them, and how the new knowledge has informed you about your next step of research. Based on your review, you can identify a gap left by previous studies or scholarly discussions in terms of what needs to be done next to further scholarly understanding of your topic. You should also discuss what will be the appropriate methods (observation, interview, experiment, or survey) to conduct a study of your own in order to fill the gap.
For the in-text citations and the list of references, you must follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style.
Your literature review should be 2000-words long.
