The Future of Healthcare and Advanced
Practice Roles

This assignment addresses the following
objectives:

Discuss
the culture and environment of healthcare that will affect future advancements
in nursing practice.

Evaluate
caring, compassionate, culturally competent, and evidence-based practices in
the roles of the nurse using the nursing process to provide patient-centered
care in a variety of healthcare settings. discussing the future of healthcare
and its impact on advanced practice roles in nursing.

Introduction
discuss generally the future of healthcare 1-2 paragraphs

Choose
3 anticipated issues in the future of healthcare, discussed in previous or this
unit, including issues such as:

1.
Social Determinant of Health
As the average age of the population
continues to increase because people are living longer, many of the elderly are
living with health disparities related to various factors including inadequate
healthcare coverage, lack of access to healthcare, social isolation, and
transportation difficulties (Clark & Boyd, 2017). Nurses, in advanced
practice roles, are in positions to support and deliver specialized care for
the elderly. Nurse educators teach students the concepts of health inequalities
for the elderly and others most vulnerable. Nurse leaders may assist in
influencing public policy while practitioners continue to educate on health
promotion strategies and insure the most cost-effective strategies of
treatments.

2. Increase Diversity
of Patient Population
The National Academies of Science (2016)
noted that the profession of nursing still has work to do to promote diversity
in the profession to better relate to diverse populations. A greater diversity
in all healthcare occupations will insure more culturally relevant healthcare.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) (as cited in The National Academies of Science)
called for a greater diversity in nursing student population to ultimately
increase diversity in the profession. The progress has been slow up to this
point though the trends are improving, such as an increase in men in nursing by
7%. However, the National Academies of Science report the number of males in
nursing is less than 10%. The number of African Americans in nursing is
hovering around 10% as of 2016. Hispanic nurse numbers are approximately 5-6%.
Many students, in minority cultures, find the cost of education prohibitive.
Nurse leaders can assist by advocating for minority scholarships to attend
nursing programs.
The nursing profession must strive to
promote diversity of its members while majority cultures in nursing develop
improved cultural competence. Nurses, in advanced practice roles, must first
develop their own cultural competency to be a role model for other
practitioners, students, and employees.

3
increasing health care costs and innovation
Nurses, in advanced practice roles, are
important to assist in decreasing healthcare costs in the future. Nurses can
greatly influence positive patient outcomes which decrease healthcare dollars.
Oftentimes, nurses find themselves with the opportunities to influence needed
change in healthcare to promote positive outcomes and become more efficient.
Those opportunities exist for nurses to become innovators. Thomas et al. (2016)
noted that nurses who are innovators, are agents of change for their patients.

Nurse leaders and educators are in
positions to support nurses in their innovations. They can assist in providing
a culture that fosters innovative patient care strategies to decrease costs and
promote better outcomes for patients.
