body of your 5-10-page paper:
o Briefly introduce the topic and explain its relevance to the current field.
o Synthesize the research to develop a logical, persuasive, evidence-based report that
elaborates on the current state of the topic.
o Discuss limitations in the research or evidence, to-date.
o Summarize your topic and include applications for practice and future research.
o Include citations within the body of your paper, where applicable.
• Add a Title page at the beginning and a Reference page at the end of your document (these do
not count towards the 5-10-page limits).
• American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition style is preferred as it is what is used
at Saybrook University, although it is not required to follow the style for the writing
sample.
The academic writing sample is evaluated to assess the applicant’s ability to:
• Select current, relevant, scholarly articles to support a topic of interest.
• Organize thoughts, critically think through a topic, synthesis evidence to substantiate a position,
and present information in a logical format.
• Refrain from using personal or other biases to direct a position on a topic.
• Properly use grammar, punctuation, spelling, and overall sentence structure and formatting.
• Appropriately cite information and reference materials using a professional reference style of
choice.
2. Submitting the academic writing sample
• Send a copy of the writing sample to your admissions counselor as an attachment via email
AND
• Upload the same writing sample to the application portal.
• The following formats are accepted:
o Microsoft Word® (.doc/.docx)
o HTML
o Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp)
o OpenOffice Text (.odt)
o Rich text format (.rtf)
o WordPerfect® (.wpd)
o Plain text (.txt)
o PostScript (.ps)
o Adobe® PDF with highlightable text (i.e., not an image file)
