Profile an artist of particular interest to you. It could be someone just breaking through, perhaps just outside the mainstream, who is especially innovative, singular, original. It could also be on an artist who has faded from fame but is still producing notable work. Try to avoid artists who are already major household names (The Rock, Beyonce, Jimmy Fallon). Inform us about someone slightly below the radar, someone we should know more about. Please try to pick an artist outside of film and TV, artists in areas we have not yet explored, like a dancer, a visual artist, a poet or author, a stand up comic, a musician, an architect, a fashion designer, or even someone who may push the boundaries what constitutes art.
Consider the following structure for your profiles:
Start with a grabber: a clip or a quote or a story that captures the essence of the artist you are profiling.
Once you have our attention, summarize the key points you will be exploring about your subject. Touch on the essential contributions and innovations of your subject. Establish the scope of the profile, essentially its thesis and focus areas.
Provide the background and history of your subject. Be thorough.
Highlight your subject’s major moments and important works or breakthroughs. Be sure to discuss at least a couple of these at length.
What is your subject’s goals, objectives and/or mission? Why does your subject do what he/she does? Consider these questions:
• How is the artist unique? How has what they are doing, or what they have done, set them apart? How are they a breakthrough?
• What are the strategies used by the artists to engage the community?
• Who is their target audience? How are these strategies particular to the target audience?
Discuss the evolution of your subject, addressing how the artist has changed over the years?
What has the critical and commercial reception to your subject been like?
Discuss the subject’s achievements and legacy. How has your subject been a game changer? What is the artist trying to do in the future? Current or upcoming projects? Exploring other areas, new horizons?
Highlight or re-emphasize a few things about your subject that you find personally significant and impressive.
