Grading scheme
Introduction and conclusion: The introduction paragraph is brief, to the point, and includes a thesis and a roadmap of the paper (does not include general statements about the conditions of existence, justice, unfairness of life, etc.). Introduction clearly gives a rationale for the paper (why it is important, and why specifically the question should be pursued in the way it is in the paper). Conclusion is likewise concise and briefly revisits the thesis and evidence.
/15
Thesis: Thesis is one or two sentences telling the reader precisely and clearly what you will argue in the paper about a specific case or problem or situation (not an entire theory or a broad problem as a education).
/5
Content of the body (evidence): The thesis is strongly supported by the evidence in the body of the paper. Evidence is logical, coherent, accurate, based on sufficient research that is not misrepresented, carefully interpreted (rather than just presented in the forms of quotes) and linked back to the thesis. All made claims are supported by evidence.
Evidence is interpreted without wasting space, as this takes away from the content (ex. Describing the veil of ignorance for a page or two is a waste of space. Describing the details of a court case or the job of a doctor without analysis for a page or two is a waste of space).
/30
Quality of the position/originality: position is rigorously defended, showing excellent understanding of the theoretical positions applied and the specific problem/case/situation being addressed, taking into account its complexity. Effectively questioning assumptions and conclusions when necessary.
/20
Organization and Style: The thesis is defended using carefully and logically organized paragraphs that develop the position rather than contradict it. Sentences and paragraphs are coherent, written in the active voice. Sentences vary in structure and flow beautifully (not choppy).
/10
Writing mechanics and formatting: no grammar or spelling mistakes, no vague sentences. 8-10 double-spaced pages, using 12pt font, 1 inch margins. Paper is in MS Word format.
/10
Sources and Citations: Sources are properly and consistently cited using either the APA or MLA style for all sources. Complete and proper Works Cited included at the end of the paper.
