The plan for my essay it to look through the lens of cultural studies, specifically at the music of the time period. Throughout our reading of the novel I was struck by how often music and lyrics were interspersed with the text. I am looking at those specific moments in the novel and stringing together commonalities/themes that appear in this instances.
I have found great sources on the impact jazz and music had on Ellison. My hope for the essay is to explain the “why” for the inclusion of the lyrics. In discovering how Ellison’s identity was shaped by the music he listened to, I believe the music of the Invisible Man also shapes the identity and views of the narrator.
