Thus, you will be required to submit a research assignment guided by the following instructions:
“Although
critical discussion has often focused on new sounds and technologies,
many post-war composers used traditional media. Like their forebears,
they sought an individual voice within the classical tradition” (Grout
and Palisca 2006: 909).
Discuss
the merit of this statement, taken from the prescribed text book A
HISTORY OF WESTERN MUSIC by J. D. Grout, & C. V. (this quote is from
the 6th edition but you can consult the most recent edition if it is
more accessible) with specific reference to the lives and work of
Olivier Messiaen and Benjamin Britten by writing a 4-page research essay
on the life and work of both composers. You should include
bibliographic information on both and make sure to highlight how each
composer’s personal convictions are represented in his music (hint:
religious, pacifist, sexual orientation etc). Use the Grout and Palisca
prescribed book quoted above as a basis to start form. You need to
consult at least six reputable (steer clear of Wikipedia and/or similar
sites) sources and integrate it into your writing, making sure to use
correct and consistent in-text referencing which features corresponding,
alphabetical bibliography entries in the correct and consistent format.
Please look at all the feedback from your previous assignments as to
where to improve. Also, please do consult the material I posted on
Moodle that explains correct referencing principles featuring examples
of different format sources.
Start
off with a clear introduction outlining your aim. In your
conclusion/summary, you need to discuss the merit of the given statement
above – that is to say, to what extent it is true. In order to do this,
you need to dicuss what you understand under notions such as “new
sounds and technologies” and “traditional media”. This is all contained
in the source quoted which I suggested you start off with.
