Discussion posts are used in this class to share your informed ideas, to generate discussion with
classmates, as well as for classmates to constructively respond. This give-take dialog may take
practice, but it is essential to developing a sound research idea and plan.
You are required to be part of this online community, but hopefully you will use it fully to
enhance and support professional development for you and the group. Part of the assessment
criteria for the course includes assessing the quality and quantity of your participation in the

The following characteristics are considered to be part of excellent discussion contributions and
are used to score the quality and level of your participation.
• Timeliness: The earlier you respond, the earlier that your post becomes available for
discussion response. I would like to see every discussion post get at least one response
from a class mate, but this may be difficult if you wait till the last minute. Please note that
you will not be able to see posts of others until you post. The goal of this forum is to offer
a safe place for research ideas and to have a dynamic discussion.
• Substantive: Your posts and responses should be thorough and thoughtful. Just posting an
“I agree” or “Good ideas” will not be considered adequate. Support your statements with
examples, experiences, or references.
• On topic: Make certain to address the discussion prompt(s). This does not mean you
should not extend the topic, but do not stray from the topic.
• Share as appropriate: When relevant, add to the discussion by including prior knowledge,
work experiences, references, Web sites, resources, etc. (giving credit when appropriate).
• Expression proficient: Your posts and responses should be complete and free of
grammatical or structural errors. They should be written in a professional style, void of
“text” speak and slang.
The first post must consist of an original thought or observation from you in response to the
question. The post must be at least two FULL paragraphs in length. If a source is cited, the
