Choose 3 of the following. When appropriate, be sure to thoroughly analyze the texts by addressing specific moments/quotes while you answer the questions about the techniques or the underlying themes that these authors/poets are trying to express. Try to avoid repeating texts in your answers. Relying too much on one text for multiple answers will result in less credit. The holistic grading will be based on accuracy, thoroughness and creativity.
Discuss the two poetic forms- the villanelle and the sestina. What are their characteristics? How are they similar? Discuss an example of each. Why does the form seem to fit what the poem is doing? Would anything change if these poems switched forms?
We discussed the traditional parts of fiction: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. Use one of the short stories from this term and see if you can locate these parts. If you can’t, then discuss how the story strays from this format.
Rewrite the ending to one of the following: “Pancakes,” “Cathedral,” or “Story of an Hour.” Make sure the new ending is a credible one, an ending that makes some kind of sense, based on what has come before. You can either change the present ending or add on more to the present ending. This should be no longer than 1-2 pages.
Choose two poems that relate to family that we encountered this term. Focus on the images of both, and compare/contrast the poems based on these images. How do the images help express the poems’ main themes? How do the images in the two function in different or similar ways from each other?
We have discussed the importance of creating conflict/tension within and/or among characters. Choose two pieces from this term and describe the tension that is being depicted. Analyze specific moments in the texts to demonstrate how the writer is effectively bringing this to the reader. Avoid summarizing- cite specific moments that illustrate your points.
