The Covid 19 pandemic, income inequality, and jobs lost to automation have
pushed the question of a minimum income for all Americans to the Congress and
the pages of our newspapers and magazines. In fact, the recent stimulus money
sent to individuals and businesses is a form of Universal Basic Income (UBI).
Proponents believe UBI will decrease poverty in this country, improve the health
and welfare of the poor, and allow parents to take a more active role in their
children’s lives. However, opponents point to the cost of UBI, 3.2 trillion each year
(2017 estimate). They also believe (1) that UBI will create a disincentive for people
to work and (2) that low-income people will spend UBI payments on drugs and
unnecessary things, rather than on basic needs.
