Discuss what constitutes an acceptable academic source during the semester.

OVERVIEW
You will produce a 6-8 page term paper (about 1,800-2,400 words
of main text) for this course.
Your research paper will:
– review the relevant literature
– motivate and develop an original hypothesis
– draw a conclusion about that hypothesis with an original
analysis (analytically, empirically, or by appealing to
results from secondary sources)
– contain a bibliography of all sources
– include some form of quantitative evidence, in a self-
produced chart, table, or graph
o You will most likely use data from secondary sources,
when doing so you must create an original chart,
table, or graph
– contain an appendix of charts, graphs, tables, etc., as
appropriate
The methods to draw a conclusion about a hypothesis are
numerous, e.g. mathematical models, regression analysis, other
statistical tests, reviews of the literature, appeals to results
from secondary sources, etc. Choose a method suitable to your
hypothesis. You DO NOT need to do a regression analysis or
formal mathematical model. You DO need to use some form of
quantitative evidence.
You must turn in a research proposal outlining your hypothesis
and methods for testing clearly. The research proposal is worth
50 points. See the syllabus proposal due date. See Carmen for
the proposal guidelines.
You will upload a rough draft of your research paper to Carmen,
to be peer reviewed by three other students in the course. In
turn, you will peer review the rough drafts of three other
students. You must submit a rough draft to take part in the
peer review exercise. You must take part in the peer review
exercise to receive points for your rough draft. 50 points
total are possible for this combined assignment. See the
syllabus for the due dates.
PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT A BLANK ROUGH DRAFT JUST SO YOU CAN GET
POINTS FOR THE PEER REVIEWS. IF YOU DO THIS, AN EXTRA 10 POINTS
WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM YOUR TERM PAPER SCORE FOR BAD MANNERS.

You will upload a final copy of your research paper to Carmen by
the due date. See the syllabus for the final paper due date.
TOPICS
Your topic should:
– have something to do with Europe
– be historical (i.e., about a time before 1950)
– be economic in nature (in a broad sense)
– NOT be a topic covered in-depth during lecture (see
syllabus for a list of topics covered during lecture)
o If your paper is merely a re-hashing of topics
discussed in class, you will receive a very low score.
– NOT be about World War II, Naziism, or the interwar German
hyperinflation (because there’s more to European history
than this)
SOURCES
You should use at least FIVE academic sources for your research
paper. We will discuss what constitutes an acceptable academic
source during the semester. Sources on the syllabus reading
list do not count. The OSU library’s guide to research in
economics is at the following website:
