Hello everyone,
Booker T. Washington became a leading African-American voice during the late nineteenth cetnury and into the early twentieth century. Slavery had been ended after the Civil War, 1890s brought about the Jim Crow laws (mandating segragation of the races), and tensions in the South were heated. This was a volitale time in American history.
Before his famous “Atlanta Exposition Address” in 1895, Washington founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and then in 1900 founds the National Negro Business League.
Yet, there area many among the African-American community, especially at the time when Washington was at the height of his popularity, that spoke out againt Washington’s approach to the racial and cultural divide.
Research how other African-American leaders began to respond to Washington’s “Atlanta Exposition Address,” especially that of W.E.B DuBois. Discuss what oppositions were being made and questions being raised by other African-American leaders with regards to Washington. Analyze the different approaches to this cultural issue. Finally, where does Frederick Douglass fall in this debate?
