Imagine that you are working with a client who lost a loved one a few years ago. They are still in the grief process, and you are interviewing them about the person they lost, and their experience with grief and loss. Imagine the questions you would ask them, and follow the prompt below:
(All readings listed in the directions have been uploaded)
PART 1
Introduce the person and write a summary of his or her experience (this is a person that you create, and you the entire paper will be based off of them and their loss)
Cite five separate readings that you would use to create the set of questions you would ask to understand your subject’s loss. Explain how each reading would be helpful in formulating the interview questions
How are attachment theory (Bowlby) and assumptive world theory (Janoff-Bulman) relevant to this loss?
Discuss where the person is in their grief process, considering Worden’s four tasks of mourning and the dual process model from Stroebe and Schut
What evidence do you see of Neimeyer’s “meaning making?”
How does the client’s age, sexual orientation, faith, and culture play apart in their grieving process?
Is there evidence of Klass’ “continuing bonds?” Please explain.
Briefly describe the family dynamics related to the loss and describe the secondary losses that emerged.
Use your “case” to critique the readings. Does this person’s experience seem to “fit” the literature? What in the readings was most helpful to understand this person’s experience? Were there contradictions between the readings and this person’s lived experience? Can you suggest an explanation for this?
PART 2
What were your own reactions, feelings, thoughts, judgments, and/or any surprises that arose from the interview? ie: if you were to sit down and interview this person, how would you feel?
What are your plans for “relentless self-care” in practice especially in relation to strong feelings or reactions with clients who are grieving?
PART 3
Suggest how you would proceed with this person if they were your client, and why?
What has this interview taught you about social work with grief and loss? What do you still need to learn? Where are your “growing edges” and what kind of learning plan will be helpful?
