Discuss why The Great Patriotic war (WWII) takes the special place in the history of the USSR. As Elem Klimov said in his interview, it is a “sacred topic”. This is the reason why many talented directors worked with this theme and why we have one more section of films, dedicated to this war. “Cranes Are Flying” (first title “For Your Life” ) by Kalatozov (“Golden Palm Branch”, Cannes), “Ascent/Acsension” by Larisa Shapitko (“Golden Bear”, Berlin), “Ivan’s Childhood” by Andrey Tarkovsky (“Golden Lion”, “Golden Gates” and many other prizes at international festivals) tell different stories, but all of them have one more main topic/line, except of war, not less and may be even more important – it’s clear in view of the directors (they see and present the story through this view/prism ). So, what these films about? What messages directors sent to us? What these topics/parallel lines about? (And please, note, that Tarkovsky’s and Shapitko’s messages will not be identified only at the frame of the film – they will go further : with Tarkovsky – into Eisenstein’s “forth dimension” and with Shapitko – you’ll need to use your knowledge about Jesus Christ story to identify the message). Of course, in this section you have choice – you may watch 2 of 3 films, however, I’ll recommend to work through all 3 – I think it will be very beneficial for your learning process.
