Discuss your thoughts on various training methods and what makes them effective.

Write Your Discussion Post 50 or more words
This week, please share your thoughts on various training methods and what makes them effective. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Describe a particular training method and when it might be selected over alternatives. For example, web-based, one on one, mentoring, simulations, lecture, et cetera.
Discuss ways in which gaming, or other aspects of technology, may help shape training and development today. Specially, how might this give employees an opportunity to apply what is being taught?
What outside resource (image, video, credible or scholarly article, research study, or web resource) best reflects your experience or interest in employee training and development? Share the link within your post. Why did you select this item to share?
What about this week’s content did you find to be of the most interest to you in your professional development and/or academic journey?

Training and Development is much needed in the work force. I was just having a conversation with one of my colleagues on how I feel our job should have a training department. I don’t feel that new employees get the necessary training and attention they need to be successful at doing their job. Most times they are sitting with someone that is already overwhelmed with work so they don’t get quality training.

I’d like to discuss computer based training. My current job uses this a lot for thing such as policies and procedures, work place ethics and harassments, or even how to eliminate cyber attacks. For these type of trainings I feel that computer based is sufficient. With this being computer based it allows you to take it at your own pace, and when it’s convenient. It’s also nice to be able to see different roles played that demonstrate what the training may be about. For example, you may see Peter and John making inappropriate comments in the break room that depicts sexual harrassment. Someone may not have been aware of this until they actually got to see the role played.

I think the training of the police officers stimulation that was discussed in our text is a perfect description of how gaming can be used for training. This is interactive which allows a person to be more hands on. My preference in training would depend on the person and what is being trained. Because people learn differently it’s necessary to have multiple ways to present information. In my own personal experiences the most effective for me would have probably been classroom setting. This allows you to be face to face with your training to ask any question, to see the teaching live and in person and to hear what your peers would have to say.

Good evening Class,

Almost ten years ago, I was at Advanced Leadership Course with the Army and as part of a tech initiative, they wanted to see if we could perform squad tactics on a computer game (a really detailed game made specifically for this). The first iteration went ok, most students were going with the flow and doing what they were supposed to. The second iteration was dull. The Senior Group Leader left the room, and a few of us decided we were going to hijack a helicopter. Against orders from the one running the mission, I flew while one other person gunned, and we crashed right into the convoy. Everyone died. I did a lot of pushups.

Although I’m almost ten years older, I’m not sure I would do anything different now. I don’t really see that as being a medium to test aptitude or critical thought. I also think that in the real world, you encounter real obstacles, even in training, that a game won’t simulate. In this game, there were no vehicles overheating, no radios not working, no obstructions in the road, or no inclement weather.

I think there are times where simulations are effective, but I don’t think you get much efficiency out of the training time when it’s in a completely different environment. Time is our most valuable resource, and we need to get the best efficiency based off of the time we have.
