How are these artists using their artworks to affect social change?
These artists are showcasing the tensions between art, human rights and politics. All viewers have a difference in vision in what they see, which is probably why some of their work can be super controversial to some people.
What changes do you think each of these artists are hoping for in their societies?
After watching these two videos, I believe that these two artists really want to bring awareness to what is happening in society. I believe when art is displayed to affect social change, the artist wants the viewer to have their own thoughts and feelings on the piece of work but to also understand where the meaning behind it comes from.
In your opinion, why is art a unique vehicle for promoting societal change?
Art can make you feel things that other forms of media can’t. You can decided for yourself how you feel about the piece of work and make sense with what the artist is trying to convey. You decide the meaning of the work while taking in what the artist created it for. It gives you another sense of imagination and gives you the ability to feel what you want to feel about it.

How are these artists using their artworks to affect social change?
Diego Rivera’s murals didn’t shy away from difficult subject matters and depicted real life instances throughout history, that he too lived through. But he also shows the positive aspects of society that bring hope and positivity. Both of these aspects can bring social change from displaying true experiences in history and for the viewer to learn from it.
Ai Weiwei also isn’t one to shy away from hard topics of interests, which in doing so bring a conversation to such topics. He is bringing awareness of how the Chinese government is using surveillance to control citizens.
Both artist are fighting against political and social issues and are using their art to bring awareness and hopefully changes.
What changes do you think each of these artists are hoping for in their societies?
I think Diego Rivera doesn’t want to repeat history but also bring hope to his community through his art.
I think Ai Weiwei wanted to bring awareness to different topics in the world, but usually having to do with Chinese culture, politics, or society, that others may not see as important.
In your opinion, why is art a unique vehicle for promoting societal change?
I think art is unique in promoting social change because a lot of art is about how you interpret what the artist is trying to tell you. So instead of having someone telling you how you should feel or what you should believe, art kind of helps guide you into beliefs and your own opinions, and I think that idea applies to art promoting social change.
