Discussion Assignment 7: Mount Everest

Mount Everest was formed about 60 million years ago. It is considered to be the world’s highest elevation at 8,850 metres or 29,035 feet (and increasing between 1 and 3 centimetres per year). The first ascent of Mount Everest was on May 29, 1953 by Sir Edmond Hillary of New Zealand and his sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, of Nepal. The highest cause of death on Mount Everest is avalanches, and many corpses remain on the mountain. In 1996 there was a major climbing disaster on Mount Everest. Eight climbers died. In 2014, an avalanche killed 16 people, most of whom were sherpas. On average five people die each year on this mountain.

Climbing Mount Everest in a sustainable manner means meeting the needs of existing climbers and the host region while protecting the environment and enhancing opportunities for the future. For this assignment:

There are many views about climbing Mount Everest. One is that Mount Everest expeditions have become too commercialized, the negative impacts too great, and untrained individuals have no business climbing this mountain by paying their way up the mountain. Another view is that the mountain is there and anyone who has the financial and physical resources to attempt the climb should be able to do so. Clearly state your side of the argument and justify your position. Consider motivations for hard adventure activities, and positive and negative tourism benefits including financial, cultural and social aspects.
