Diversity, inclusion, and equity have been the three big points so far in this class. Police departments have recently been under much scrutiny, especially multiple agencies being defunded, thus not having the capabilities to continue or enhance diversity programs. Two agencies in particular in this discussion will be utilized. One is a very localized department, while the other is a state police department. The two departments in this discussion are the University of Virginia’s police department (UVaPD) and the Illinois State Police (ISP) department. UVaPD has introduced a new training module for officers that provides training that enhances the officers’ capabilities of noticing and understanding hate crimes, especially against minority groups, such as the LGBTQ+ community (Shuler 2022). This training is essential because for large college campuses that have very diverse populations, understanding when a hate crime is committed without having to second guess can lessen the risk of tampering evidence if it is a hate crime. This relates to the course topics because understanding diversity is a pathway to providing more inclusive and equitable care in and outside the workplace.
The ISP had created a Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) in the year 2004 (Illinois State Police). The DAC, in 2020, began “Unconscious Bias Training for individuals participating on promotional interview panels. This training is an example of ISP recognizing that the evaluation process for sworn employees needed to be improved” (Illinois State Police, para. 2). This article relates to this course because the ISP DAC has identified that the department needs to change, has identified the possible problem as unconscious bias. In order to provide a more equitable opportunity for promotions this change must occur.

The New York Times’ top leaders stated in a memo to staff on Wednesday that they were dedicated to making fundamental changes to the workplace culture of the firm in an effort to make the newsroom and other Times divisions more diverse and inclusive. This is discussed in the New Time article (Robertson, 2021). The research stated that Black and Latina persons was underrepresented in leadership positions and claimed that many employees of color had experienced “unsettling and occasionally unpleasant day-to-day working situations.
Black employees who are not in leadership roles depart the organization more frequently than white employees, according to the study. In our 2020 employee survey, Black employees, and Black women in particular, gave the organization poorer ratings in almost all areas, with the lowest results coming from justice and inclusiveness (Robertson, 2021). This article is relevant to this course because socially responsible leadership has made reading and discussion about inclusion with many organizations a priority. Leaders who are pushing change to end their bias and discrimination against others should support this campaign (Ferdman et al., 2020).
This article relates to this course, as reading and discussing inclusion with many agencies has been one main focuses of socially responsible leadership. This is initiative is important leaders who are promoting change to eliminate their bias and discrimination towards others. It’s been concluded that inclusive leadership is a good practice, and truly inclusive organizations foster a sense of worth, respect, and recognition for all employees (Ferdman et al., 2020).
Second current event is about implementing inclusive strategies which has been discuss in this course. This article relates to inclusive teaching strategies approaches that address the needs of students with a different background, race, and abilities. Inclusive strategies seek to promote self-reflection and need for change when the need necessary. These strategies contribute to inclusive learning environment in which all students perceive to be valued and able to succeed.
kachani et al., 2020 notes that inclusive suggests ways to be more intentional about how you deploy those tools to create the best learning environment for your students. In fact, inclusive teaching practices may not be something totally new; you may already be using many inclusive teaching strategies without specifically calling them such.
The Columbia University Center for Teaching and Learning summarized the research on inclusive teaching into five principles, then added research summaries and suggested teaching strategies to accompany each principle in order to assist instructors in better structuring their intentional approaches to inclusion in teaching (Kachani et al., 2020). According to our Handbook for Inclusive Teaching at Columbia, the five principles offer instructors some options for their trip as they act as compass points for the various routes that lead to inclusive teaching practices. Using tactics that are founded on these evidence-based principles, we hope to provide instructors with a variety of options for addressing their individual teaching needs (Kachani et al., 2020).
