Students must submit at least two posts for each weekly discussion. Your first post is due no later than 10pm on Wednesday, must answer one of the following questions, and be at least 250 words in length. Your second and any subsequent posts must respond to a classmate’s post on a different document. Second posts must be submitted no later than 12pm on Saturday and must be at least 150 words in length. You are encouraged to submit more than the required two posts as doing so will enrich the discussion. Posts must provide parenthetical citations like this (name of document, page number) to support students’ argument. In other words, when you make an argument, you will have to provide the evidence so others may refer to the appropriate part of the reading if necessary. Be as specific as you can and try to avoid making sweeping generalizations that are often not supported by the evidence.
Questions:
1. How does Michel-Guillaume-Jean de Crevecoeur describe Americans? What does his description suggest about the nature of their national identity?
2. Read the Declaration of Independence carefully. How is it organized and why is it organized in that way? Please cite specific examples that illustrate some of the ways in which the Enlightenment influenced how it was written. (Note: At some point during the week, the class collectively must answer this question as doing so will help to illuminate students’ understanding of the Founding Father’s worldview and arguments.)
3. There are many reasons why George Washington is held in high esteem by the American people. In reading his Newburgh Address, with what was he most concerned? What does it suggest about the general’s character and leadership abilities?
4. Compare the rhetoric used in the Declaration of Independence and the slave petition presented to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1779. What conclusions can you draw?
