Linda Evan’s Discussion Post:
If a young child watches violence or is given toys that encourage violent behavior, it desensitizes the violence. The video shows the clown to be pushed and hit is teaching wrong behavior.
I do think that watching violent TV shows and games desensitizes the act. Young children may not realize that people can not come back after being shot. It is not a do-over.
I have not been around anyone that is violent behavior. However, my personal observation learning has been watching my parent’s behavior and interaction between them and how to treat a person you love. They were like the perfect parents, never argued in front of us kids, they laughed and treated each other with respect.
Conditioning reminds me of cults, brainwashing people to follow and do things just because they are told to; Jones town comes to mind. Some people may get aggressive if they want out or get frustrated in day-to-day life. or get tired of being told what to do.

Faith Malo’s Discussion Post:
Observational Learning
Observational learning is the concept of watching someone else’s actions and behavior, and later imitating what was seen. A part of how people learn is by viewing examples and copying them, just as such someone would do when trying to learn a new job or skill. This way of learning is accompanied by four steps: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation, (Cherry 2021).
After viewing the video of the Bobo doll experiment, it was shown that a child copied a violent act to a doll, after being demonstrated by an adult. However there is an additional factor that impacts this theory. According to Cumberbatch (1990) children who were familiar with the doll were 5x less likely to become violent with it when compared to those who have never played with one before. (McLeod S. A. 2014) These results are interesting because it shows children did not imitate the negative behavior because of their preexisting knowledge of what to do and how to behave with it. This study exhibits that the background of someone’s involvement with a scenario effects whether or not one will copy actions through observational learning. Therefore, violence is more likely to be copied if there is no previous experience or interaction with the subject.
From my own experience of observational learning, I found myself watching what others were doing in a hospital waiting room, and copying them. I saw people go and drop off the paper they have received from the front desk and then go sit in a certain section of the hospital. I was unfamiliar with the process so I imitated what other people were doing around me.
While observational learning is imitation through modeling, operant conditioning is the reinforcement or punishment after a behavior, and classical conditioning involves an involuntary response to a stimulus. An aggressive behavior may result from conditioning if someone saw or experienced a positive outcome after watching a person act out. It may also stem from pairing a controlled stimulus to an unlearned response, creating a controlled response, (Bouton, M. E. 2022).
