The following questions are based on suggestions at the back of the novel in the section designed for book club discussions. Answer each with at least two specific references from the text for each question to support your ideas. Include the page number in a citation after you refer to the text.
You should write at least one well-developed paragraph in response to each question. You will not be able to see anyone else’s post until you have made your own. Your initial post is due by 11:59pm on Wednesday, June 16. Then you must respond to at least two classmates by 11:59 pm on Sunday, June 20.
1. Both Isabelle and Vianne take on war-time roles that depart from traditional roles assigned to women during that time period. Talk about what would have been considered “normal” for women in the 1940’s and contrast that with the nontraditional role that each sister plays. You will need to do some research to understand women’s roles in that time period. Be sure to cite the source that you use.

Do we still have “traditional” roles and expectations for men and women in the 21st century? What is your perception of those roles today?
2. Take a moment to talk about Beck. Is he a sympathetic character (this means is he essentially likable)? Do you believe that he was a good man or that he only intended to seduce Vianne? Did he deserve his fate? Give specific references from the text to justify your response.
