“In the eyes of the community, computers in the classroom have come to symbolize a school curriculum that is up-to-date and instruction that is benefiting from “the latest technology.” This is, of course, a silly leap of faith.”
The above quote means to me that teachers have adopted ways to include computers in the classroom, but some may feel like computers or technology should not be in the classroom. Communities and schools have come to the realization that students can learn through a computer because it has curriculum and instruction that is up-to-date and will help prepare scholars for the future. Others feel as if students learn best from a teacher and not a computer or latest technology.
Computers or technology in general have helped shaped today’s community. Technology is everywhere you look. This can be in school or outside of school. Computers or iPads play a huge role in my classroom. I personally use iPads to actively engage a group of students so that I can pull small groups or have different learning centers in the classroom. When my students learn on an iPad, they know only to do the things that I have assigned. There are different resources like IXL and EPIC that help keep students engaged and continue their learning when I am not with them. Outside of the classroom, I have seen menus for restaurants, money, and even tickets for events all been digital. Chapin (2013) states that there are different programs like Pearson Digital Learning that help teachers. “Using these programs allows teachers, administrators, and in some schools parents, to keep track of student and class progress on curriculum objectives” (Chapin, 2013, p 105). These types of programs make learning more visible to the teacher by identifying student’s strengths and weaknesses so that teachers can intervene before it is too late (Chapin, 2013).
I do not agree with the statement above. I personally feel as if technology is a great resource that helps students enhance their learning. Today, one would be lost if they did not know how to operate any sort of technology. Incorporating technology into schools will help prepare students to live in the world today. Meador (2019) gives us a few technology tools that every teacher needs. First is the internet. “For teachers, the internet provides access to a massive library of lessons, activities, and digital resources that can be used to enhance classroom curriculum” (Meador, 2019, par 2). Second is a document camera. “Using a document camera, teachers can place any materials they want to share under the camera, which captures an image and delivers it to the LCD projector” (Meador, 2019, par 4). Third is a SmartBoard. Smartboards are an interactive whiteboard that have replaced chalkboards and whiteboards (Meador, 2019). “Teachers can create engaging, active lessons using the many tools the SmartBoard provides” (Meador, 2019, par 5).
A scripture that I feel relates to this discussion post is from 2 Timothy 3:17. This verse states “That the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” I’ve picked this verse because technology will help students complete different assignments and equip students to produce excellent work.

Good evening,
The statement is something that I neither agree with nor disagree with. Every day we are in a world that is consumed with technology. For example, you have cell phones, smart televisions, smart cars, smart boards and the list is forever growing. My biggest concern with the utilization of so much technology is when do your kids really get to be kids. When you work with technology you must plan lessons that will incorporate the technology in a manner that is beneficial to the student as well as the objective. With a computer you cannot really observe the whole class to make sure they are staying on task. “Technology integration is the classroom is seen as an important educational innovation to enhance teaching and learning processes in the 21st century.” (Backfisch,2021).
One thing I have learned this week is RAT. RAT stands for Replacement, Amplification and Transformation. It is a tiered guide for how technology is rolled into the classroom. The lowest level is a simple replacement of traditional technology. An example of this would consist of a book is transferred to a PDF document or tablet. The intermediate level is more implementation and efficient teaching methods. An example of the intermediate level would be the smartboard as mentioned above. Finally, the last level is the highest which consists of methods that can be utilized based solely on technology. An example of this would be virtual reality or tours. One thing COVID-19 did successfully was show us how to function with technology to have communication and a small resemblance of life. “It plays an important role in many aspects of communication, information access, business and finances, education, medicine, to name a few.” (Lengel, 2020). Our world largely relies on email, texts, Zoom, Google Meet, and other applications to function and stay connected to everyone else. The pandemic pushed teachers to have a better understanding of how to work with a computer to still teach while all the students were at different locations. It was largely successful, but some students really suffered with mental aspects and academically.
“The modern-day student requires active engagement, novelty, and content deliveries that are fun and exciting.” Computers are one thing I’m not sure can give them that. At home and everywhere they go they have screens. I know there is a benefit to utilizing technology but fully relying on it is a totally different topic. Virtual field trips and videos to engage would be great but having a student read the book online and do all their work on the computer is just not ideal. Technology offers multimodal representations. Through technology students can get text, pictures, audio, video and this is something that can benefit all learners. With everything you will always find positives and negatives.
