Trust is essential to the coaching
relationship. We are assisting people to step out of their comfort zone,
develop personal growth, and reach their potential. This can be a challenging
process and the coachee will not feel comfortable working with the coach if
they do not feel trust in the relationship. In our class text written by Keith
Webb (2019) we get some principles listed that facilitate building and
maintaining trust in the coaching relationship. These principles are:
·
Supporting rather than controlling.
·
Encouraging ideas rather than sharing them.
·
Yielding responsibility rather than taking it.
·
Processing decisions rather than making them.
·
Believing in the person rather than trying to fix them.
·
Keeping appointments and honoring confidentiality.
Several of these principles are related to the
idea of the coach being the helper. It is important to gain a good coaching
mindset. As equally important as knowing trust building principles, it is also
important to understand obstacles in building trust. In another of our class
texts by Blackaby and Royall (2018) there are the four C’s for building trust.
I will argue that I can flip these and find four ways to discourage trust. The
four C’s if reversed could be:
·
Un-Christ like character.
·
Low competence in what you do.
·
Low commitment to the coachee.
·
Not treating the person with genuine care.
Looking over the items that build distrust, I
see a pattern of not putting your best effort forward as a coach. I certainly
do not want my clients to feel any of the items listed above. Thinking of how
the bible provides examples of faith, I think of James 1:6, “But let him ask in
faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind” (New American Standard Bible, 1990, p. 1315). I
think this passage relates the idea of how trust makes it possible to
accomplish and distrust makes the task lost.
