These weekly discussion topics are designed to get you to start thinking about issues we will confront next week. That is, I’m interested to learn your take on matters before we’ve begun a study of the issues involved. Hence, you should feel free to express your opinion on the question posed. The grade here involves simple participation: as long as you take a stand on the issue — and give me three or four credible sentences explaining why you take the stand you do — you’ll receive full credit.
Next week we’ll be exploring questions of economic justice: that is, how do we determine what people rightly deserve? Is our own economic system just?
To that end, I’d like you to think about and respond to this question:
Do those who have more in our society generally have more because they work harder and so deserve it? Or do the ones who have more tend by and large to have been the beneficiaries of luck — such that their wealth is for the most part undeserved?
