This discussion paper asks you
to reflect on what you’ve learned about equity markets.
You will find a list of
recommended topics below; please choose one or more of these to explore in
depth and use this as an opportunity to build a detailed argument
that demonstrates your understanding of at least one aspect of equity
markets.
Reminder: Your written analysis should be at least 3 pages long
(single-spaced)
Suggested Topics:
1. Discuss the role that equity markets
play, explain how they are used by different participants, and discuss
the market infrastructure and network of intermediaries
which help them function. Note any areas
which you feel are problematic.
2. Explain how equity markets are regulated
and note the laws and institutions in place to protect
investors. Provide an in-depth
discussion of which aspects of this regulation you feel are effective, and
which are problematic and need improvement.
3. Discuss at least one intermediary (or
group of intermediaries) in the equity market in depth, explaining the function
that they perform & the practices that they engage in.
What are they doing well & what issues can you identify with the way
they function?
4. Choose at least one of the topical issues
we have discussed and explore it in depth, drawing lessons about the current structure
and functionality of equity markets:
