Disease/ Biotechnology Presentation

Objective: To practice investigating a scientific topic of the student’s choice. Students will perform scientific research on a topic they have chosen relating to disease or biotechnology and present this research in the format of a video or voice recorded presentation.

Directions:

After you review the notes posted on BB over viruses and read the corresponding chapters in your book you will venture into scientific research. Your first search should be a basic search into different types of viruses (human, animal, or zoonotic). Once you find a topic that interests you and you feel you have a grasp on you should focus your research on that. You should find several articles with information on the disease you have chosen, this assignment will require more than three sources. You can choose to present on the pathogen that causes the disease, the pathogenicity, treatment, and/or treatment trials, effects of the condition, what leads to the condition, etc.
Students also have the option to complete a presentation on a method of biotechnology. In this unit you learned about different forms of biotechnology that have aided in our understanding of genetics and disease. In the lecture you learned about different types of sequencing that have been developed, genetic engineering, and PCR. These are just three of hundreds of technological advances that have been made in the scientific field. You can also choose to research a specific biotechnological advance and present on it. I do not want forms of treatment for disease for this option, rather diagnostic advances if you will.

Presentation:

You have the option to record a video presentation or an audio presentation to submit on BB. The presentation should be 5-7 minutes long. If you’d like to have a powerpoint accompanying the presentation there is no guideline on how many slides you need to have, just be sure to have enough to last the length of the presentation. Be sure that your audio is clear when you submit your presentation. Be creative!
