Diseases introduced to Hawaii by Westerners like Measles, Smallpox and Leprosy had a devastating effect on the Native Hawaiian population throughout Hawaii in the 19th century, and the disease which had the most impact was Influenza.

There are three intermediate steps which support this assignment. The first two are worth 10 points each, and the
Instructor Review is worth 20 points. They will each explained in detail with their own instruction sheets. This is a seven-page paper, meaning that you will have seven pages of writing, not including your cover page
(optional) and Works Cited page. It will be double-spaced, using Times New Roman (or similar font), 12 point.
Your citations and Works Cited page will follow the standard Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting.
(If you prefer to use APA or Chicago Style, this is acceptable, but please discuss with your instructor.)
The 7th Edition is the current edition for the MLA Handbook, which can be found at many libraries, or can be
purchased. There are, however, some excellent online resources for MLA formatting available for free; the
below tab goes directly to Purdue Universitys Online Writing Lab (OWL):
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11/
(Purdues OWL website also has information for APA and Chicago Style; here is a link to their main Research
and Citation page: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/ )
The paper should be written in third person narrative, not first person narrative (the I point of view). (There
have been a few exceptional cases in which first person has been allowed; contact your instructor for approval if
desired)
There is no absolute minimum number of primary or secondary documents required for your research; what
can/should be expected will vary based upon the topic. In general, you should have at least 2 or 3 primary
sources, and about 5 or more secondary sources. While many great sources can be found online, you will
impress your instructor if some of your sources are found in print (books, journals, archival documents, etc.)
The use of Hawaiian diacritical markings is optional. It is acceptable to use them, and acceptable to not use them.
