DNA collection debate
From the assigned text reading, the lecture, PowerPoint, and DOJ pamphlet you have learned the great importance placed on DNA collection when processing sex assault scenes. All of these efforts are fruitless if there is no one to which you can compare the collected samples, and the actor is not in CODIS. In order to help this and solve more crimes it is useful to build the CODIS database. One way to effectively do this is to collect DNA samples from people that are arrested when they are processed. This is done when we fingerprint and photograph the arrested person. Should we be able to collect a DNA sample from arrested persons, or does this cross a line of civil liberties?
HINT: Be sure to do some legal research. This is a fluid issue that has some court decisions, but is still being debated.
