Do they know how they can reduce their risk for diabetes?

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help you gain information about diabetes, while practicing your oral communication skills in talking with your family about a specific health topic.
Directions: For this assignment, you will need to interview (orally-not through e-mail) at least three family members (parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, and uncles) to see if diabetes is present in your family health history. When interviewing the family members, be sure to ask the following questions:
1. Have you ever been tested for diabetes?
2. Have you ever been diagnosed with diabetes? If so, what type of diabetes? How old were they when they were diagnosed?
3. If they have been diagnosed with diabetes, what were the symptoms they experienced? How are they treated? What lifestyle changes have they made?
4. If they have not been diagnosed with diabetes, do they know what the symptoms of diabetes are? Write up what they described as the symptoms of diabetes.
If they don’t know, write up what you shared with them what you learned from in pp. 395-406.
5. Do they know how they can reduce their risk for diabetes? Write up what they think the risks are. If they don’t know the risks, be sure to share the information from pp. 402-403 in your text book. Write up what you shared with them.

This assignment is intended for your to learn from your family members, or for them to learn from you. When you have completed the interviews, write up (in complete sentences, don’t just write “yes” or “no”) your results from each of the three interviews and your reaction to the experience. Be sure to include the first name and ages of the individuals you interviewed. Use 12 point font, 1 inch margins and double space your 1 page paper.
