At this stage, the outline’s purpose is to demonstrate that you are making progress towards your ATA essay. In practice, you will need to proceed with your research – the following is a roadmap for developing your project.

By now, you should have submitted your abstract. You have received comments and perhaps have had a consultation with the professor. Start by addressing these comments, and then make sure you are confident of your choice of content or company.
Watch the program or the company’s output (the TV channel or streaming platform). Take notes of the various content offerings or collect examples from your specific content’s episodes. You will need to use these notes/examples in your descriiption and analysis.
Visit the website and social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) of the program or the company. Please read up on the company’s history, development, how it presents itself to the public. Or read up on the content (Serie’s cast, show’s presenter, production team, etc.), find and read reviews of the content (Avoid “fan” reviews). Stick to reviews or commentary by professionals in newspapers and magazines – if in doubt, ask!
Figure out who the target audience for the content/company is. Check the commercials or descriiptions to re-confirm your assumptions about the target audience.
Based on the readings, analyze why the content/company is doing well or poorly. Is it fresh and different, or is it clichéd and unimaginative?
This is the most important — identify the content’s/company’s place in television history by comparing it with significant counterparts from TV’s past that are similar to it, similar in genre, style, characters, situations, themes, issue-orientations, etc. Cite evidence from the readings, use quotes to establish the nature of shows like yours from the past, citing specific examples. Then, draw your comparisons.
