Do you believe that technology can be used as a tool for manipulation?

The following assignment will evaluate students’ knowledge of the novel, 1984, and test how students apply skills learned in the course lectures and discussion. In a seven-page comparative essay, students will analyze the theme of Technology (as control) as it appears in the novel and one other form of media. As discussed in class, telescreens and microphones monitor the people of Oceania, and Winston’s character helps readers learn how technology, which is often assumed as being a source for achieving good, can quite often be used as a tool to achieve the exact oppositive –evil.

For this assignment, I encourage you to look deeper into how technology was used by the government to control the people of Oceania. How has technology been used to enforce order, ideas, and opinion? Do you believe that technology can be used as a tool for manipulation? If so, how? Or perhaps you believe that technology can only be used as a means of control to an extent and that the human mind can resist technological advances? These questions can help you formulate an argument prior to writing your paper.
