Instructions:
Find and review an original scientific paper that has been published in the last 5 years. The paper may describe any of the following:
1. A novel Bioinformatics method, tool or database
2. A new biological discovery made purely from the application of computational/mathematical methods
3. A novel biological prediction/model that has been confirmed/validated with experimental results
4. A novel experimental study containing a significant amount of computational/mathematical modelling work, which has driven the experimental work
The paper can be from either a specialist journal (e.g., PLoS Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics, Nucleic Acids Research) or from a journal of wider readership (e.g., Nature, Science, PNAS, PLoS ONE, Scientific Reports). You can agree or disagree with the conclusions of the research, but it must have been peer reviewed and published in an established scientific journal. The research must be original – no reviews of review articles please! The Nucleic Acids Research special issues (Web Server, Database) can be used as a starting point, but please also investigate the original research papers that described the new methods or algorithms.

7. References: You must include a full reference list and papers must be correctly cited in the main body of the text (citations are not necessary in the lay summary). Page limit:
The report must not be longer than 3 A4 pages inclusive of the references section and any figures/tables. The font used must be no smaller than 11pt Arial font with 2cm margins and text should be single spaced. N.B. This is a page limit not a target – so focus on the quality of your writing not quantity. Marks will be deducted for essays that exceed the limit.
