Do you see now why someone might choose to use one of these tests over the other? Explain.

In this lab, you will practice and develop your exercise testing skills with some hands-on experience! Last week you performed the aerobic step test where you stepped for three minutes in order to estimate your VO2max. This week you perform two other tests to estimate VO2max: the Rockport walk test and the Cooper 1.5 mile run test. These three tests are all great, simple tests to use for estimating aerobic fitness so it’s good to be familiar with them all. Go back to the instructions for the Rockport Walk test and the Cooper 1.5 mile run test on the The Exercise Tests page. Be sure you understand each test thoroughly before applying them.

How will you apply them? You have two choices for this lab: you can perform the tests on yourself once and then perform them on a friend or family member OR you can perform each test twice yourself. It is recommended that you perform the tests on yourself and a friend or family member as this will give you the best practical experience of both knowing what it feels like to do the exercise as well as what it’s like to administer the test. If recruiting a friend or family participant proves impossible, the second option of performing the tests twice yourself is your backup.

One more thing! Prior to performing the tests, you should administer the PARQ+ to whoever is performing the tests (this includes to yourself). This will give you some practice with this important form.

Answer the following questions upon completing the exercise tests:

How did yours and your participant’s (if applicable) VO2max compare to established norms?
How did values compare between the two tests?
Do you see now why someone might choose to use one of these tests over the other? Explain.
What difficulties did you encounter while performing these tests (either your own or while testing someone else)?

For this lab, you will turn in the following:

Any raw data you collected (numbers you wrote down for each test)
The estimated VO2max for each test and each participant
One (your own) or two (your own and your participant’s) completed PARQ+’s
