Each paper must be 2-3 pages (3.5 is ok), single spaced, 12-point font, with regular margins. For each paper you must write a theoretical analysis of a current events article that deals with international affairs. This is not meant to be a summary of the article, meaning that you should spend no more than two to three sentences describing the article. Instead, you have to use one of the theoretical perspectives (realism, neo-liberalism, constructivism, and liberalism) to analyze the content in the article and answer the following questions:
What are the core assumptions of the theory? Explain each one in detail, provide the logic, give an example.
How do these assumptions help explain the phenomenon described in the news? In other words, how would a realist, constructivist, etc. make sense of what is happening?
Does x theory do a good job at explaining the event? If yes, explain why. If no, why do you think the theory has a tough time explaining the events, what is missing from the explanation? If some of the theory’s assumptions help make sense of what is happening, but other assumptions do not, explain the strengths and weaknesses of each assumption.
What would x theory expect to happen next?
If x theorist was advising one of the states described in the news article, what would she advise that country to do to deal with the crisis? Why would she provide such advice?
Do you think such advice by that theorist will make matters better or worse? Explain why.
Provide a link to the article you read at the top of your paper.
The article you analyze has to deal with international relations. That means relations that take place across borders. Articles that deal with the domestic politics of other states do not count (that is comparative politics). The article has to deal with the relations (including war, economics, diplomacy, etc.) between two or more states, or a state and non-state actor across borders, or a state and an international organization, etc.
theory has to be realism.
