Assignment 3 (2.1.1-a- Advocate for client access to the services of social work; 2.1.8-a – Analyze, formulate, and advocate for policies that enhance social well-being; 2.1.8-b; 2.1.10C-d – Negotiate, mediate , and advocate for client systems) – Write your representative or senator about an issue that is important to you. The representative may be at the state or federal level (Access http://www.house.gov, congress.gov or Louisiana.gov to find them). To help you decide whom to write, find out which member of congress have any important health and human service committee assignments. Do your representatives have committee assignments that could make them influential on issues important to you? Do your representative have position statements available to constituents about specific social programs? Advocate on behalf of the population most effected by the representative’s position.
Letter of advocacy
Social workers often advocate for policy changes. Please write a letter to a local, state, or national legislator requesting a revision in a policy. The change you mention should focus on issues that are affecting people in a negative way (economic, social, medical, educational, etc.).
