Analyze how the relation between individual aspirations and collective norms play out in one of the following texts:

These narratives are all quite different, and the topic may be understood in several ways in one text, which gives you a great deal of freedom in how you decide to angle your topic. Don’t forget to give your essay a good title, which informs the reader what it will be about. As relevant, include a discussion on the relevance of cultural background to the text you are analyzing!

Grading Criteria: To receive a passing grade (G), the student should be able to use literary concepts as appropriate (e.g. setting, characterization, symbolism, narrative perspective) and compose a comprehensible essay that
Demonstrates the ability to understand the thematic content of literary texts.
Includes textual evidence such as quotations or references to passages in the primary texts.
Identifies the subject of the essay and contains a thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.
Does not contain awkward sentence structure or language errors that distort or obscure meaning.
Contains paragraphs that support the thesis statement.
In addition to the above criteria, to pass with distinction (VG), the student should be able to compose a comprehensible essay that:
Demonstrates an ability to engage with the text and draw a conclusion from that analysis.
Smoothly integrates textual evidence, such as quotations or references to passages, into a literary analysis that supports the thesis statement.
The essay should be written in idiomatic and grammatically correct English, with few language errors.
