Assignment Goal

To have students investigate and explore how SJSU’s environment and college culture affect SJSU student health behaviors to create and submit an evidence-based persuasive essay for the Spartan Daily newspaper opinion section (an op-ed article) which:

Addresses the question: Does SJSU’s college culture support student health?
States clear opinion and issues a call to action through an argument based on evidence
General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs) met with the successful completion of this assignment.

Students will be able to:

1. Recognize the interaction of social institutions, culture, and the environment with the behavior of individuals.

Overview of Assignment
“Culture encompasses the behavior patterns, beliefs, and all other products of a particular group of people that are passed on from generation to generation” (Santrock, 2017, 8). Being a student at San José State University (SJSU) presents the opportunity to be a part of the institution’s culture, along with the culture of being a college student. In this op-ed writing assignment, you will explore how being at SJSU is shaping your health behaviors.

For this assignment, develop a 750-word maximum 2–3-page paper (not including title and reference pages) that convinces the SJSU community of your position on whether the SJSU college culture supports student health, and includes the following components to support your view:

1. An explanation of the multiple dimensions of health and wellness

2. References and identifies at least one of the following:

a campus/online campus resource
the lack of a campus/online resource
a campus policy
the lack of a campus policy
3. A clear and compelling call to action
