Formal Analysis Paper- – Students will write and upload a 6-10 pages paper that includes: a formal (visual) analysis of a work of art made by a female from a local museum collection, or one that deals with gender issues; research using three academic sources that are cited in the paper using MLA /Chicago/or another academic format; an image, labeled using appropriate academic format; and a works cited page that lists all the works consulted or referenced in the paper, using proper format for the citations(parentheses or footnotes). Of course, students are required to analyze gender. Like other cultural analyses (social, economic, socioeconomic), gender plays an important role in art. As you have learned, gender has shaped many artworks in some way. Below are a few questions you might want to ask as you begin to write:
You might also feel the need to include an analysis of history, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, or identity. This is not only accepted, but encouraged if you think it will help your reader understand the work more fully.
For example, a formal and a gender analysis might not address issues of sexuality. If your work contains imagery and /or messages that deal with sexual activity and sexual orientation, then you need to address these issues in the paper. For an analysis of sexual orientation, for instance, one would ask:
Does the artwork reinforce or challenge assumptions about sexuality that prevailed in the time and place it was made? How so?
Are there any homophobic or hetrosexist sterotypes apparent in the artwork? If so, what are they?
Does the artwork seem to suggest that heteronormativity is “natural” and proper, or does it seem to critique heteronormativity? If the latter, what is the nature of this critique.
