Draw up an essay plan, and then write an essay, based on that plan, addressing the following:
Describe the ways in which contemporary development in the Amazon basin is causing damage to the environment and the ways in which the state, the market and civil society are acting to mitigate this.
Marks will be allocated as follows:
10 marks for the essay plan
60 marks for the essay written on the basis of the plan.
(Your essay has a word limit of 1200 words. The word count applies only to the essay and does not include the essay plan. Include a word count at the end of your essay. One mark will be deducted if you do not include the word count.)
The question asks you to describe the ways in which contemporary development in the Amazon basin is causing environmental damage and to describe some of the ways in which the state, the market and civil society are trying to mitigate it. You should make explicit whether the actions are being taken by state/s, the market or civil society.
Information that needs to be covered:
Provides evidence of the variety of life supported by the ecosystems in the Amazon basin, the importance of the Amazon’s forest in supporting biodiversity and the local and global significance of this.
Look at the significance of the Amazon for Indigenous communities and the benefits of more traditional and sustainable systems.
ESSAY PLAN
Title. All essays must start with a title. It is acceptable to either give the essay question/statement as a title, or to give your own title, provided that the title clearly and objectively states what the essay is about, based on the question asked.
Introduction. This is usually just one paragraph that sets the scene and acts as a signpost to the reader as to how your answer will develop. It should provide important background information and inform the reader how the essay will address the question. You should give definitions of any key terms you will use either in the introduction or the beginning of the main body. You should aim for the introduction to take up roughly 10% of your word count; here, about 120 words.
Main body. This is the bulk of your essay, where you will fulfil the basic requirements of the question. For a 1200-word essay, it will probably be between four and eight paragraphs and about 80% of your word count – about 960 words. You need to ensure that each paragraph covers a distinct and significant point that is supported by evidence, while also linking with the paragraphs before and after it.
Conclusion. This should be one paragraph where you summarise your essay and, most importantly, gather the main points that you have made to give a direct response to the question posed or statement to be discussed. The conclusion is not the place to introduce new information or ideas.
